The Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo (NVIC) is the academic centre in Egypt providing services for scholars and students from nine supporting universities in the Netherlands and Flanders. NVIC’s activities mainly focus on the fields of Arabic & Islamic studies, as well as Egyptology, Archaeology and Papyrology.

Every four years NVIC opens one position for a PhD candidate; the current position in Egyptology is co-funded by NINO. The student is registered at Leiden University with the LIAS graduate school, and expected to reside in Cairo on a local contract with NVIC.

NINO seeks to strengthen the ties between the PhD student and Leiden’s excellent Egyptological facilities. Our co-funding of the joint NVIC/NINO scholarship consists of a montly contribution and a travel allowance, facilitating research trips by the PhD student from Cairo to Leiden.
