In two articles in this journal, Stephanie Dalley has raised doubts about the authenticity of a black stone monument of king Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon, commonly known as the Tower of Babel stele. This article tests her reasons for considering the stele to be a fake against the epigraphic and iconographic evidence and concludes that it is genuine.
The new edition of the Ritual for the Purification of a House (CTH 446), offers an excellent opportunity to reflect upon the composite tradition of the Hittite magic texts dedicated to the purification of places in various ways. This concise review article will focus on some aspects, such as the role of the performers of those practices and their relationship with the deities involved in the removal of impurity. It will also discuss the term ešḫar, “blood” and “bloodshed” in the lists of calamities of purification rituals, where it appears to be used to include all possible reasons of pollution that may affect the patient, whether a human being, a deity, or a place.
When in Mecca in 624/1226-7, the Iranian-born judge and logician Afḍal al-Dīn al-Khūnajī (d. 646/1248) wrote a short work on logic called al-Jumal for a local scholar. This densely written, impenetrable work later saw a whole series of commentaries, especially in North Africa, the first one by his student and polymath Ibn Wāṣil al-Ḥamawī (d. 697/1298). The present edition is the first edition of Ibn Wāṣil’s commentary and the first to be edited from among the commentaries mentioned. After a brief review of the Introduction and the methodology of the edition, the remainder of this article will delve into a number of logical issues bearing testimony to Ibn Wāṣil’s genius and independence.
